Director of losta movies from the 20s to the 60s, including Treasure Island and War of the Worlds. Was also a cinematographer and special effects man.
Treasure
Island (1950) -- Pretty fun live-action by Disney starring Robert Newton as
the quintessential pirate. In fact, he pretty much invented the pirate as
we know it today. (Byron Haskins also directs the sequel, Long John
Silver.)
War of
the Worlds (1953) -- In spite of the movie having an overall bland, studio
look, it's got some impressive and influential effects (thanks, George Pal) for
its time (it certainly influenced Spielberg and some of his contemporaries) and
the story is told well enough, though by the end it becomes a weird religious
movie.
